Quick Guide to Indicate Possibility of a Visual Processing Disorder

Below is a list of some of the symptoms noted in individuals with visual processing difficulties. It should be noted that many of these symptoms are not unique to a visual processing difficulty. Some may also be noted in individuals with other types of deficits or disorders, such as attention deficits, hearing loss, behavioural problems, and learning difficulties. It is important to be aware that medical conditions such as amblyopia (lazy eye), strabismus and brain injuries can have a major effect on vision.
  • Reading and/or using a computer or doing 'close' work causes eyes to itch or water.
  • Jerky eye movements.
  • Eyes that cross or turn in or out.
  • Squinting, eye rubbing, or excessive blinking.
  • Blurred or double vision.
  • Headaches, dizziness, nausea, or fatigues easily after reading or close work.
  • Head tilting, closing or blocking one eye when reading.
  • Frequent loss of place when reading.
  • Failure to recognise the same word in the next sentence.
  • Omits, inserts, or re-reads letters/words.
  • When reading, words, letters, or lines run together or jump around.
  • Difficulty concentrating or comprehending reading material.
  • Persistent reversals of letters/numbers.
  • Poor hand eye coordination.
  • Inconsistent or poor sports performance especially ball games.
  • Writes up or down hill and has difficulty aligning digits or beginning of sentences.
  • Unable to stay on ruled lines when writing.
